The 10 second strength and mobility test (SRT)

The other day, a loved one shared that she didn't know that she couldn't get up from the ground until the day she fell down and it took all her strength and another person to get back up.   I can see that happening.  Many of us just stop sitting on the floor and we don't know that we have lost the strength and mobility to get up until it's (almost)  too late.

You might have seen some things going around about predicting mortality from a sit and rise test (SRT)?  If you have - cool!  If you have tried the test, even cooler!  And if not, now you can and you won't regret it.   This test has proven to be a predictor of mortality from all causes and can be a great workout just in the execution.
Pilates' kids do this, believe it or not, as a fun game!  Most kids can pop up and down but not all.  But it just gets better as they do it more often.  The same is true for  mom and dad, but they might need a modification or a little helping hand.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you.
Warning: i t's a bit of a reality check.
Try it every day.  Even if just getting up from the chair.  If the kids keep doing it, they will not lose it.  Let your kids know that they can get up and down off the floor in class this way (look ma, no hands!).  Show your kids' teachers and they can all do it!  See how many ways you can get up from the floor without using hands....  And now you have a real workout.

The original study showed this test to be a highly accurate predictor of all causes of mortality.    Not for kids, but for adults over 50.  But if kids sometimes struggle with this we can see where that might be leading in 40 years for them.

If you'd like to see the original study, it's here on pub med:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23242910/.  And a more detailed video can be seen here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQ2WA2T2oA&app=desktop.

Keep up the great work and try it every day!
